Heavy rainstorms in Hong Kong have led to widespread flooding, schools closing, halting of public services and delays to trading in the region’s stock exchange. Hong Kong authorities issued the highest level black rainstorm warning at around 4 a.m. Wednesday local time, the first of its kind in three years.
The warning was in force for over five hours. More than 150 mm of rainfall were recorded over many parts of the region. A total of 24 cases of flooding and seven landslides were reported. The rain disrupted public transportation, and all day schools were suspended.
Public services such as judiciary courts were also temporarily closed. The stock market was forced to suspend its morning trade. Weather forecasters say the region will continue to be affected by heavy rain and thunderstorms this week.
