Water quality testing has been carried out on the Jiangsu section of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's eastern route, it comes ahead of the opening of the entire eastern route, when the diversion "goes live".
Chinese engineers are beginning the process of diverting water from the Yangtze River into the Jiangsu section, starting from today, Thursday. It's taken 11 years to get to this point and the whole eastern route should reach full operation by the third quarter of 2013.
Water from the Yangtze River will be diverted northwards to ease the significant water shortages in China's northern regions. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a huge infrastructure effort, and will eventually feature three sections when it's completed by 2050. The eastern section is the first to be completed.
