China has refuted the claims of Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei reiterated that China and Japan had previously reached a consensus to shelve the Diaoyu Islands dispute. He urged the Japanese government to accept the consensus reached by the two nations and solve the Diaoyu Islands row through dialogue.

Hong Lei, Spokesperson, Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, "When China and Japan normalized diplomatic relations, the elder generation of leaders from both countries, in assessing the overall situation of Sino-Japanese relations, decided to "put off the Diaoyu Islands issue to be solved later". This is a historical fact."
