Americans queued to see the Statue of Liberty as it was opened to the public for the first time after being shut since Superstorm Sandy hit Liberty Island last year.
The statue which was thrown open to the public as part of the fourth of July celebrations, had been spared damage from the storm last October. But Liberty Island where it is located had suffered some damage with broken railings, docks and paving stones being torn up.

On Thursday, Liberty Island was decorated with star-spangled bunting, but some parts remain blocked off. Nevertheless, there were long queues at Battery Park in Manhattan where ferries leave for the tiny island.
Many visiting the island gathered to listen to a traditional band and watch a ribbon cutting ceremony with officials, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
