There was a thrilling combination of comedy and carnage on Sunday in London, as weird and wonderful motorless vehicles hurtled downhill in the world's wackiest road race. Soapbox vehicles shaped like, among other things, an oversized asparagus and even a black coffin were on show at the Redbull Soapbox Race.

Initiated in the year 2000, the Redbull Soapbox Race encourages the wildest imagination and wackiest showmanship. The competition held at Alexandra Palace on Sunday was the first in London in nine years.

Competitors were proudly showcasing their designs, shaped like aeroplanes, animals or loaded with animal dolls, vegetables or human statues. And the task is to race down the hilly streets, powered only by the force of gravity.

Approximately 70 soapboxes were entered into the race, and the winners were chosen judged on speed, creativity and showmanship. Competitors reached speeds of up to 40 mph on the terrifying route.

Although the fastest ones to cross the finish line were looked upon favourably, speed was still nothing compared to personality. All in all, the Soapbox racers injected a dose of humor and craziness into the day of around 20,000 spectators.
