UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called Nelson Mandela a "Giant of our times" in his speech at a special session of the UN General Assembly.
The special session was called on Thursday to celebrate the former South African president's 95th birthday and to honor his devotion to public service, social justice and reconciliation. Ban praised Mandela for giving 67 years of his life to the struggle for human rights.
As the anti-apartheid leader turned 95 in hospital, Ban said the members are united in concerns and are also joined in admiration for a towering figure in the world-wide fight for equality and justice. He called for everyday efforts for humans to take action, inspire change, and build a more peaceful, sustainable and equitable world. He added, that to commemorate the Day, the UN is joining a call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to "Take Action, Inspire Change" to volunteer 67 minutes to help others on July the 18th and every day thereafter.
