The late-80s cantopop musician Danny Chan was among the first generation of pop idols in Hong Kong. But this pop legend died way ahead of his time in 1993, when he was only 35 years old. Now, twenty years later, a memorial concert has been held in Hong Kong, with a number of celebrities participating.

Saturday saw Hong Kong's top Cantopop performers band together to pay tribute to pop icon Danny Chan. They sang many of his greatest hits, including "Wait" and "Just Loving You".

Award-winning Eason Chan is one of the star performers of the night. He recalls many years ago, when he met Danny and nervously asked for a photograph.

Eason Chan, Singer, said, "Every time I go to my clubhouse I think of Danny Chan because I've bumped into him there before. But back then, he wasn't very keen on having his photograph taken. But I really wanted to, so I decided to ask. I was only a child then. At that time I wasn't thick skinned enough to frequently ask for autographs and photos."

And Chan was not only known for his cool demeanor, as singer/actress Miriam Yeung found out through her record label manager, Paco Wong.

Miriam Yeung, Singer/Actress, said, "Funnily enough, I learned about Danny through Paco, who worked with him frequently. I always ask Paco about Danny. I asked what his favorite things were, and Paco said fashion, champagne and the color purple. So then I started learning how to drink champagne, especially rose. So now I can drink. I've drunk champagne ever since."

Danny Chan's influence on later generations of Cantopop artists remains evident even today. Just ask Gigi Leung.

Gigi Leung, Singer, said, "It's a pity because when he left us, I hadn't met him in person yet. But sometimes, you don't have to meet a person in order to connect with them. As fans, we can silently let his music influence us. To us, that is enough."

Danny Chan died on October 25th 1993, after suffering from severe brain damage and lying in a coma for 17 months.

In 2009, he was given the Golden Needle Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously, in recognition for his contribution to Cantopop music, and his inspiration to future generations of artists.
