Groundwater radiation levels near a tank at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have soared to a new high.
The operator Tokyo Electric Power says water samples collected from a well near a leaking storage tank contained the highest levels of beta-ray emitting substances yet. That was 400 ,000 becquerels per litre, the highest reading since the nuclear accident was triggered in March 2011. Samples in previous days had been showing levels of just 60 to 90 becquerels per litre.
Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited a fishing port in Fukushima, where fishermen are conducting "experimental operations" to catch selected marine species that have not been affected by the nuclear accident. Abe ate locally caught seafood, claiming the fish was safe to eat.
