The Chinese Foreign Ministry has defended its newly established East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone. The zone, which covers the disputed Diaoyu Islands, allows China to identify, monitor, and if necessary, take emergency defensive measures against any flying objects entering its airspace.

Japan has warned that the zone will lead to more unpredictable events in the disputed area. But in response, China said Japan’s criticism was baseless, and urged Japan to correct its mistake and stop hampering China’s territorial sovereignty. China added that the zone conforms with international law, and will not affect the freedom of flight. China also reiterated that the Diaoyu Islands are part of China’s inherent territory, and it is determined to defend its territorial rights there.

Meanwhile, the US said it was deeply concerned over the establishment of the zone, and was committed to defending Japan. China said it urged the US to remain neutral on the Diaoyu Islands dispute, and avoid inappropriate statements.
