The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has confirmed that a key senior official, who's also the uncle of DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, has been sacked. The DPRK's official state news agency, KCNA, says Jang Song-thaek was removed from all posts and expelled from the Workers' Party of Korea for "anti-Party and counter-revolutionary crimes."

According to the agency, Sunday's decision was made at an "enlarged meeting" of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. Jang was described as a "double-dealer" who abused his power and challenged the country's sole leadership system. He's said to have gravely hindered the role of the Cabinet by taking control of major economic development sectors, committed irregularities and acts of corruption and "led a dissolute and depraved life".

Jang, 67, is married to the sister of Kim Jong-un's father and late DPRK leader Kim Jong-il. He's said to have been an influential economic reformer, who served as senior general and vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, and secretary of the WPK's administration department.
