Though Christmas is still two weeks away, parts of the city are already immersed in Christmas spirit - at least the secular part - with many Christmas trees glowing and two Christmas markets open to the public.
The Christmas atmosphere is evident downtown at West Nanjing Road, where a three-storey-tall Christmas tree lights up a new hotel near Jing'an Temple. A Santa Claus descends from the sky to give out presents.
And here near the Shanghai East Dock in northern Hongkou District, the annual Shanghai Christmas Market is open for a whole month, until January 5th. Visitors can wander around 70 stands to buy Christmas decorations and sample the delicious food.
"It looks like the European Christmas market, the whole, the shape, the layout. I cannot see what really do they prepare now, and what do they sell, but the Christmas tree is very beautiful." Hungarian expat Il Diko said.
Hu Jinjin, Organizer of Shanghai Christmas Market, said, "At Xintiandi, we could only provide visitors some stands, while here, we have places for amusement facilities. We also set up a party house, where we will hold 14 different parties in 30 days. Visitors can also go aboard cruises after parties."
Meanwhile, outside the Hamburg House in downtown Shanghai, there is another traditional German style mini Christmas market. And this one is free.
"We have some typical musicians to perform like on Christmas market you know in Germany, like in Lueneburg, Luebeck or even as I said in Hamburg. Furthermore, we just offer you typical food, like Lebkuchen oder Gluehwein, as we call it a very tasty drink." Thorstern Tschirner form Hamburg tourist board said so.
