Hong Kong is almost synonymous with holiday spending -- especially for mainlanders. |
Contrary to popular expectations, digital gadgetry will be hot this Christmas – but it won't be on top of Santa's list.
What's likely to be the most desired this season is all things bling, forecasts the Hong Kong Retail Management Association. Tiffany for one has decked out its shop windows to entice Mainland shoppers.
Local rivals in contrast are trying to lure shoppers with discounts, reason why the volume of jewelry sales in the past month has far outpaced total value of sales. And it's a trend that's likely to help the sector extend its double-digit pace of growth in December.
Retailers overall are hoping sales this Christmas will more than make up for the lackluster sales growth recorded over National Holiday in October.
But just as the Christmas seasons ends, the Lunar New Year festivities begin. And this shorter gap between Christmas and Lunar New Year on January 31st is likely to keep retail sales soft in the month ahead.
All the more reason for retailers to pull out all the stops now - and make the most out of this merry season of spending.
