Seven-time Formula One world champion, Michael Schumacher, is in "critical" condition after a ski accident.

The news was released by the French hospital in Grenoble at which Schumacher is being treated. The 44-year-old German fell while skiing in the French Alps resort of Meribel. The hospital said that Schumacher suffered a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival. Meribel resort director said Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he fell and hit his head against a rock. Early reports said his condition was not life-threatening.

"I can confirm that Mr. Schumacher has been in our hospital since 1230GMT. He is currently being examined and his press attache will publish a statement very soon." said Jean-Marc Grenier, Director, Grenoble Hospital.

"He's a very good mate and above all a great champion. He was very much appreciated in Formula one." said Olivier Panis, Former Formula One Driver.
