The Chinese Winter Olympics champ and the country's greatest ever Winter Olympian, the short track speed skater Wang Meng, is almost certain to miss the Sochi Games.

The 28-year-old sustained an ankle fracture during training earlier this morning, when she collided with a team-mate. She was taken to the Shanghai Huashan Hospital where doctors say she needs to undergo surgery. It hasn't yet been officially confirmed but it is very likely she will miss this year's Winter Olympics which starts in just a few weeks time.

Being the most decorated Chinese Winter Olympic athlete ever, Wang has won four Olympic gold medals. She also holds the world and Olympic records in the 500 meter and the 3,000 meter relay.
