New Zealand has sharply criticised Japan for allowing a whaling ship to illegally enter its economic waters.
The row erupted on Monday, when New Zealand accused the Shonan Maru 2 of ignoring requests to stay out of its 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone.
The Japanese ship is reported to have been pursuing an anti-whaling ship, operated by protest group "Sea Shepherd". Japan's Ambassador to New Zealand, Yasuaki Nogawa, has been summoned to the country's foreign ministry, to explain the incident.
Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, called the ship's actions "unhelpful, disrespectful and short-sighted". But New Zealand has so far not announced any further punitive measures against Japan.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga says the vessel entered the economic zone as the result of taking safety measurements and it had every right to be where it was.
