As the games start to wrap up, we take a look back at China’s performance. While, the team was missing its biggest Winter Olympic star, Wang Meng, it was still able to win three gold medals.

With the absence of China’s most decorated winter Olympian ever - Wang Meng, it was unclear who would lead the charge for China’s Olympic squad. And it would be a trio of ladies . as Li Jianrou, Zhou Yang, and Zhang Hong found themselves on the top of the podium in Sochi.

An impressive effort for a nation that only competes in a core number of Winter events.

And they were extremely satisfied with Li Yan’s short track speed skating team who managed two gold medals, and six total – two thirds of China’s total.

China is also satisfied with their bid for the 2022 Winter Games, the thinking is that a successful campaign can act as a catalyst so the Middle Kingdom can become a more established Olympic Winter power…similar to Russia. And their time is Sochi has also provided the Chinese delegation with a partial blueprint for their bid.

So China leaves Sochi, with 3 gold medals and 9 total but before they say by to Russia, they must first take part in the closing ceremonies and leading the team into the stadium is speed skater Liu Qiuhong, despite not winning a medal the Chinese delegation felt she was a great choice and epitomizes the Olympic spirit, by overcoming recent injuries and still taking part in these Games.
