Trend chasers are moving on to France now, where Paris Fashion Week has begun. London-based designer Corrie Nielsen has presented her very first collection on the catwalk Tuesday, with a collection inspired by arts and literature.
Born in the United States but trained in the United Kingdom, Nielsen has showcased collections in London for the last six seasons. But for this show in Paris, she’s chosen to start with a clean slate.
Structured outlines and sculpted forms are the designer’s trademark. Nielsen says she was inspired by her father’s work as a sculptor.
The collection takes its influence from arts and history, and from three characters in particular -- ’Dracula’ author Bram Stoker, Joan of Arc and Peter Paul Rubens. Nielsen says they represent the entire palette of human emotion, from love to pain.
The collection goes from short dresses, skirts and trousers to long evening gowns, and one very long ensemble indeed -- it’s so long, in fact, that a model catches her heel in the train of her dress, and needs help from an audience member to carry on.
Paris Fashion Week will continue until March 5th, and is the last event in the fashion season after New York, London and Milan.
