The throng of mostly female admirers that crowded into the 798 art zone were thrilled to see Johnny Depp, engaged or not.

"Johnny Depp treats his fans well. He's handsome. He likes kids. He is kind. And he is handsome," one of the fans said.

"Due to my major in school, I watched lots of Gothic movies, including Edward Scissorhands. I fell in love with Johnny Depp then and I still love him today," said the other fan.

While Depp is known to most for his accomplishments on the silver screen, Taiwan singer David Tao who also attended the event was impressed by Depp's other achievements.

Singer David Tao said, "I always say that Johnny Depp is my favourite pirate. Although we see him on screen all the time and are familiar with his acting achievements, we didn't realise that he is also a great musician."

After a brief appearance on the red carpet, Depp spent a few moments signing autographs for a crush of ecstatic fans.

Actor Johnny Depp said, "I think there will be a lot more films coming here, I think there'll be a lot more people coming here and continuing the trend. I would strongly recommend it just based on the experience of just being able to sponge up some this culture. It's such a sense of calm here, I don't know, I haven't felt anywhere else."

Depp plays a terminally ill scientist who downloads his mind into a computer in the sci-fi drama that asks: What if we could upload a human mind into a computer? It also stars Rebecca Hall as Depp's wife and Morgan Freeman.

"One person is forced to make a choice in an instant, when your loved one is dying and you have a split second decision to whether, if you have the ability to upload their consciousness into a computer, would you? Would you do that? Would a person do that? It's quite a strange decision to make. But for love, I think we would all do it," Depp said.

Asked whether he was engaged, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star showed off a diamond engagement ring that he called a "chick's ring".

"The fact that I'm wearing a chick's ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway. Not very subtle," Depp said.

His comments follow months of unconfirmed reports of his engagement to actress Amber Heard, 27, who starred alongside Kevin Costner in "3 Days to Kill".

"Transcendence" is released in China on April 18 - the same day as in the U.S.
