Iran may be lumbered with economic sanctions but that did not stop a local team of robotics experts from sweeping aside German and Dutch rivals in football's RoboCup.

The robots, or Nao, are programmed before the game and act independently without external control.

They're only a little taller than a player's shin pads, and have yet to master the art of passing, moving and beating the offside trap. But ambitious engineers believe that - in less than 40 years - robot footballers could take on a World Cup winning human team. To make this dream a reality, programmers from all over the world have gathered in Tehran in Iran for the ninth edition of the "RoboCup International".

"Fortunately, this year good teams from good universities from around the world have participated in this competition: teams from the US, England, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, China, Japan and Mexico." Dr. Mousa Khani, Head of Iran National Robcup Committee said.

Each of the five teams in the RoboCup Standard Platform League is made up of four identical humanoid robots. The robots, or Nao, are programmed before the game and act independently without external control. They were created by French firm Aldebaran Robotics, which for the Iranian team has been a tough challenge.
