Donald Sterling, the embattled owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, who has been banned for life by the NBA after making racist comments, has broken his silence about the scandal. Online magazine duJour reported Friday that Sterling said, "I wish I had just paid her off," when referring to his girlfriend, identified only as V. Stiviano.

Stiviano recorded a conversation between the two that captured Sterling making numerous racist remarks. According to the person who conducted the interview, Sterling "expressed remorse."

The Clippers owner has kept a low profile since NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned him for life and fined him 2.5 million dollars. Silver has urged the league's owners to force a sale of the Clippers, a process now underway. Sterling will have to put his team on the block if 75 percent of the NBA's owners decide he must go.
