Internationally acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang held a concert in Dalian during the May Day holiday. Dalian is a port city of Liaoning province, near Lang Lang's hometown Shenyang.

Lang Lang seeks to inspire creativity in young pianists

Lang Lang happily accepted our request for an interview. Wearing a casual velvet suit, he rehearsed with some children who will be playing together with him on stage.

Play it beautifully. I mean the middle part. You know which part I'm talking about? Now try it. Begin when I say one, two, three, four. One, Two, Three, Four.

Many of the youngsters were nervous seeing and playing with their idol in person. But Lang Lang patiently practiced with them time and again, helping them find the mood for the notes. He says since he was very young, he had taught others to play the piano. And now he is putting more energy in education, because he thinks it's more meaningful to nurture the next generation than play on stage himself. But Lang Lang also notes Chinese children are often too conventional when playing piano. And they should find their creativity and distinctiveness.

Lang said, "You should follow the rules. But you should also unleash your imagination to present your own style. We ought to inspire children's creativity. Encourage them to perform in the way they think it should be, and then let them find balance with what you teach them. "

The superstar reveals he would go to Vienna in mid May to attend a commemorative concert for Richard Strauss' 150 birth anniversary. He will perform alongside the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to an audience of 100-thousand. The concert will be broadcast in over 120 countries. A self-confessed football fan, Lang Lang is also looking forward to the Brazil World Cup in June.

He said, "I'll go to see the World Cup. It may also inspire my playing. The tactics used on the football field, can be also used in life. I think Germany might take the title."

Lang Lang says the fantastic moments of the matches are sure to give him refreshed passion on the keyboard.
