The 2014 Billboard Music Awards has been held in Las Vegas, where the biggest names in the music biz, competed for top recognition. The King of Pop and a likely successor, prince of pop Justin Timberlake, ruled the Billboard Music Awards without even being there. The late Michael Jackson made a splash via hologram and Timberlake accepted his awards via video from overseas.

The holographic image performed "Slave to the Rhythm," a song from Jackson's new posthumous album "Xscape," along with a plethora of background dancers, beaming lights and fire blasts.

Justin Timberlake won seven prizes, including top artist and Billboard 200 album. He accepted the honors via video, from his ongoing tour.

"All the other finalists, Miley, Imagine Dragons, Bruno, Katy, I love you guys, it's not a competition, but if it is, I won! I want to thank everybody on Earth, everybody on Earth, except, except Donald Sterling." Justin Timberlake said.

Imagine Dragons won five awards, including top Hot 100 artist for the songs' chart performance, top rock artist and top duo/group among others.

R&B singers Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. scored four wins on the back of their megahit "Blurred Lines," including awards for top Hot 100 song, digital song and radio song and R&B song. Robin Thicke, who separated from his wife, actress Paula Patton in February after ten years of marriage, debuted with a new song called "Get Her Back."

"And most importantly I'd like to thank my wife for her love and support and for putting up with me all these years." s Robin Thicke said.

Seventeen-year-old pop sensation Lorde captured the award for top new artist and top rock song for the hit "Royals," which already landed her two Grammy Awards earlier this year.

"I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to grow and learn as a new artist in the spotlight at this time. I am thankful for the dialogue around my work and myself, and I am thankful to be around such talented new artists. And I'm so grateful for everything that I've learned so thank you so much." Singer Lorde said.

Jennifer Lopez was honored with the Icon Award for lifetime achievement. JLo first performed the 2014 World Cup anthem "We Are One (Ole Ola)" with Miami-based rapper Pitbull.

And country singer Carrie Underwood won the fan-voted Milestone Award.

But the show's biggest moment came when a hologram of Michael Jackson made its debut at the ceremony. The holographic image performed "Slave to the Rhythm," a song from Jackson's new posthumous album "Xscape," along with a plethora of background dancers, beaming lights and fire blasts.

The night also featured a number of collaborative performances, including an explosive duet from Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert. John Legend sang his current No. 1 hit "All of Me" on piano. And Colombian pop diva Shakira wowed the crowd with her dramatic "Empire."
