Brazil beat Chile to reach World Cup quarterfinals

The knock out phase of the World Cup in Brazil has begun and in the first match of the last 16, Brazil beat Chile on penalties. The dramatic result comes after the two teams drew one-all.

In regular time, host nation Brazil took the lead in the 18th minute with what appeared to be an own goal from Chilean defender Gonzalo Jara. But Brazil’s David Luiz was officially credited with having scored. In an entertaining first half that saw both teams create a number of chances.

Chile struck back fifteen minutes later, equalizing through Barcelona’s star winger Alexis Sanchez. And in the second half, the end to end action continued with both sides coming close to scoring. At one point Brazilian striker Hulk even appeared to have made the crucial breakthrough, only to see his effort controversially ruled out for handball.

The match went into extra time. And in the dying seconds of the second half, Chile’s Mauricio Pinilla put his side within inches of qualifying by hitting the crossbar. In the end, the tie was decided by penalties. And in the end it was Brazil who triumphed, winning 3-2 to send the home fans into a state of ecstasy.

Brazil will now move on to the quarter finals, where they will face either Colombia or Uruguay, who are due to play at 4am Beijing time.
