For those looking for their own owl experience on par with the world of Harry Potter, they need go no further than the Owl Cafe in downtown Tokyo. Visitors get to interact with animals that have an almost mystical appeal.
"In a sense, owls are this sort of extraordinary animal that exists in the ordinary world," Owl Cafe co-owner Shin Ishikawa said.
Started in 2012, the store now has long lines of people waiting to register for a 60-minute time slot to have coffee, tea or even a beer with the birds. But most visitors don't give a hoot about the long wait.

The owners say they take the owls home every night. They worry about earthquakes and also about the owls bothering neighbours by hooting at night. Coffee, tea and soft drinks cost 20 US dollars, and come with an hour with your own personal avian companion.
