Russia was looking to add to their medal haul in the pool. The country picked up two more gold medals in the water, bringing their count to five titles in swimming.

The first chance at success came in the women's 50m butterfly – and Rozaliya Nasretdinova proved too tough for the competition, as she touched the wall first. Svenja Stoffel of Switzerland won silver and the bronze went to Nastja Govejsek of Slovenia.

And they would add another gold in the men's 4x100m medley relay. Russia led the race from start to finish, and were well ahead of Germany and Australia, who rounded out the podium.

And the Russians would claim more honours in gymnastics – Seda Tutkhalyan showing off her skills on the balance beam, and a sticks the landing on her routine, as she was seeking gold in the all-around event.

She would need a solid performance on her floor exercise routine – but she she over-rotated a double back flip, and landed on her backside and lost a full point in the process. Luckily her mistake was not costly enough to drop her out of first place, however, and she won the title with a four-apparatus total of 54.90 points. Her victory made her the second Russian women's gymnast to earn games all-around gold.

The first-ever Youth Olympics Games rugby sevens gold medals were up for grabs. In the men's final, France faced Argentina. The South Americans had not lost a match in the tournament and they quickly took the lead.

France returned fire in a back and forth battle before finally taking control late to win 45-22.

In the women's rugby sevens final, unbeaten Australia took on Canada. The Aussies took the lead in just the first minute. And were never really pressured in this one as they won 38-10.

And hosts China were victorious in a tough bronze medal contest, beating the United States 12-0.
