The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards has just revealed this year's biggest winners. And it seems old favorites have been exalted over TV's shiny newcomers.
Jim Parsons accepts the award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for his role in "The Big Bang Theory" during the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California August 25, 2014. |
"Breaking Bad" held off upstarts "True Detective," "House of Cards," and "Game of Thrones," to grab the Emmy for Outstanding drama series.
"Breaking Bad" became the top drama series on U.S. television for the second consecutive year, and also picked up three top acting awards. Including Bryan Cranston as the lead actor in a drama series.
The series is about schoolteacher Walter White, who begins making and selling drugs to care for his family after a terminal cancer diagnosis. It entered the Guinness World Records as the highest rated show of all time this earlier year.
Another great highlight of the night is "Modern Family". The comedy about unconventional families won best series for the fifth consecutive year, tying 1990s NBC sitcom "Frasier" for the most comedy victories.
"Listen, we're just fully enjoying this moment. That is it. We never thought we would get here. We are incredibly, incredibly honored to have gotten this much from the Academy," said creator Steve Levitan.

Jim Parsons won his fourth lead acting Emmy for playing the pedantic nerd Sheldon in the CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory."
Another familiar face is Stephen Colbert. His fake news show "The Colbert Report" won the Emmy for best variety program for the second consecutive year.
The event also featured the performance of "Weird Al" Yankovic, who adds a goofy note to the Emmys by performing a medley of TV theme songs with added lyrics.
There were also a few notable snubs at this year's Emmys, with political thriller "House of Cards" and comedy "Orange Is the New Black" shut out in top awards.
