The modern-urban art we just saw in mega metropolises like Beijing, are a far cry from the traditional works in our next piece. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary Tibetan painter Amdo Kungba. He is said to be the Picasso of Tibetan painting.

Kungba was a master at merging traditional Tibetan painting with the realism techniques of western painting. His works can be seen at various monasteries across Tibet. The works are extremely detailed and vivid, often giving the impression that the paintings were created during the Renaissance era in 14th century Italy.

An exhibition of his artwork was held last Wednesday at the People's art Museum of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The exhibition featured 70 pieces, 48 of which were painted by the maestro himself and 25 others were painted by an art academy dedicated to Amdo Kungba. The organizer believes that his work is not only has great aesthetic value, but could also be an inspiration for contemporary painting.
