Romance, longing glances, stolen kisses -- they're the bread and butter of Downton Abbey. This time, though, the intrigue doesn't involve Lady Mary and one of her numerous suitors, but rather the Dowager Countess and George Clooney.

Executive Producer Gareth Neame confirms that the Hollywood star will be joining "Downton".

"It's more of a cameo appearance than part of the show itself but look forward to it. I think it certainly was very enjoyable for all of the cast and crew to work with him for the day," Neame said.

Despite its quintessentially English subject matter, "Downton Abbey" has proved to have universal appeal, airing in 250 territories worldwide, becoming particularly popular in the US and China.

"I have had letters from Guatemala, Finland, China, Japan, all saying that they engage with it. So it must be above and beyond just being about Englishness," said Hugh Bonneville. one actor of "Downton Abbey".

"Downton's" creator Julian Fellowes is delighted by the success of many of the young actors who have come through the show. He adds fuel to the rumours that Dan Stevens, who previously starred in Downton as the character Matthew Crawley, may be in line to play James Bond.

"So, you know I'm delighted. Now it looks as if Dan (Stevens) is taking off with his new film "The Guest". He's had very very good notices for that and they're all talking about the next James Bond. So you know, Downton's where you want to go to get a career off on the right foot," Fellowes said.

"Downton Abbey" returns for its fifth season on Sunday September 21st in the UK, and in the new year in the US.
