The Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem show is hosting more than 3,600 exhibitors this week from 48 countries, displaying a wide variety of fine jewelry, pearls, diamonds and gemstones.

Over ten percent of the participants here sell what many know to be a "girl’s best friend". Diamonds, a commodity many in the industry believe to still be the "king of all gems".

And for the first time ever, this rare, intense pinkish purple rock is being shown in public. It’s all of 3-point-37 carats, the “Purple Orchid” as it’s called, and has an asking price of four million US dollars.

There’s just too many sparkling blings around here, a feast for the eyes. Diamond suppliers here have noted - when you come down to below one-carat, demand from China’s large jewelry retailers has slowed, and that has triggered a bit of caution in the market. On top of that, polished prices have softened in the past few months.

Forevermark though is still seeing robust demand from Mainland buyers. "We are seeing the whole bridal area as being extraordinarily strong. Consumers continue to buy diamonds around bridal. So the core tradition remains strong,”said Stephen Lussier, CEO of Forevermark.

Exhibitors here say there is a lot of inventory in the market and at the show – but the jury is still out as to whether there will be a significant depletion of stock in the coming days. The fair is open until Sunday, September 21st.
