The winner of two Grand Slams and a tennis icon in China, Li Na, has announced her retirement from professional tennis. She told a press conference in Beijing that the decision had been very difficult, but that she was satisfied and would continue to make contributions to tennis in China by starting the Li Na Tennis Academy.

"I feel fully satisfied with my tennis career, and feel proud of myself. But it's the best timing for me to retire now. I have no regrets. I asked myself when I made the decision whether I would have any regrets, and my heart told me the answer was no. I have done my best," Li said.

"Tennis is what I like most of all, so I will do my best to help more youngsters play the sport. We've had extensive contact with relevant departments on starting a tennis academy."

Li already made her decision to retire known on Friday on her personal microblog, citing repeated knee injuries. Her 15-year career has brought her two Grand Slam titles, as well as seven other WTA titles. She also made her way into the 2011 and 2013 Australian Open finals.
