A court in Tokyo is hearing a lawsuit against Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The case was lodged by nearly 300 people. Most are relatives of soldiers and others who died in World War Two.

They say Abe has violated the Japanese Constitution by paying tribute at the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors the war dead, including 14 Class A war criminals. The plaintiffs say the prime minister has infringed on Japanese people's rights to live peacefully. They've asked the court for adequate compensation and to stop any future visits.

The suit also criticizes Abe's move to lift the ban on military aid in conflicts that do not directly involve Japan. The prime minister's attorney said the visit was personal, not official.
