The stage musical "The Lion King" has now achieved the most successful box office total of any work in any media in entertainment history. Based on the 1994 animated Disney film of the same name, "The Lion King" follows the journey of Simba, a young lion born into animal royalty who must reclaim his crown as king of African wildlife.

Whoever said theater is dead, take note - the stage musical of "The Lion King" has generated the largest total box office revenue of any production in any entertainment medium. It has worldwide earnings of more than 6.2 billion US dollars - that's 3.4 billion US dollars more than the highest grossing movie ever - "Avatar."

Featuring music by Elton John and the vision of director Julie Taymor, the stage version of "The Lion King" has in many ways overshadowed the film. It tells the story of a young lion cub's coming of age, and uses puppetry and dance in ways that haven't been replicated.

"I think 'Lion King' in New York and South Africa. Opening it in Johannesburg for an audience that inspired the music and never seen that kind of theater before. They came with their blankets and - the whole thing. The joy of doing that," Taymor said.

"The Lion King" chased down the overall box office crown, despite "Phantom" having a big head start: Disney's show began on Broadway in 1997, while "Phantom" debuted onstage in 1986 in London.

Industry experts say part of the show's longevity is due to its movie tie-in, simple-to-understand story, family friendly themes - and the fact that it's a spectacle not dependent on big-name stars. Twenty-two global productions of "The Lion King" musical have been seen by more than 75 million people.
