An unusual version of the classic ballet Swan Lake hit the stage at the Shanghai Culture Square on Thursday.

"Swan Lake" has graced the city of Shanghai this Thursday, not in its traditional classic form, but in the new-classic guise of "Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake".

British choreographer Matthew Bourne's re-telling of the story uses male dancers for every role, even the traditionally female parts.

Boldly shattering the traditional concept of swans in tutus, and blending dance, humor and spectacle, Bourne has created a passionate and contemporary Swan lake that no one has ever seen before.

"It just blew me away. The combination of Tchaikovsky's music, the all-male dance crew and a totally different story is a stroke of genius. Very powerful and very impressive," said Jin Xing, a dancer.

Bourne's version of Swan Lake debuted in 1995, and is the longest running ballet in London's West End and on Broadway.

Hailed as a landmark achievement on the international stage, it has won more than 30 international theater awards, including three Tonys.

There will be a total of 13 performances in Shanghai between September 25 and October 5.
