Now let's turn to episode three of our special program Colours of China to take a look at the how has Chinese people's night light life changed during the past decade.

Developing China's DJ Culture

"There's a lot, a lot a lot of space for improvement. My name is Na Siliang. I am from Northeast China. I came to Hainan for work about two years ago. I started learning to be a DJ in 1999. It was all disco before 2004, until 2005, when bars emerged. When I first started to learn to DJ, we used to play Chinese mixed music at the beginning, in our own style. At that time the so called "Chinese music"was simple and crude. As we gain a better understanding of music, step by step, and as more foreigners come to China, as well as the influence of the internet. We have access to good music and are more in tune with the outside world. I'm glad to see some Chinese DJs beginning to create their own original music. Step by step, Chinese DJ culture will develop enough to present to the world," Na said.

Across China the art of DJ has seen rapid change. Starting in the big cities in the 1990s, discos slowly started to open across the country and with them came a new breed of Chinese DJ. In 2004 Chinese night clubs took a new direction with the establishment of the night club bar, a more sophisticated establishment with music and DJs to match.
