More than three thousand people have now died in the world's worst-ever Ebola epidemic. The disease has killed almost half of the people who contracted the virus.

According to figures released by the World Health Organization, at least 6,574 people have been infected across five west African countries. Three thousand and 91 of them have died. Liberia has recorded 1,830 deaths, around three times as many as in either Guinea or Sierra Leone, the two other most affected countries. And another eight deathes are in Nigeria.

WHO officials say the agency is working with pharmaceutical companies and regulators to accelerate the use of a range of potential treatments. The agency expects to begin small-scale use of two experimental Ebola vaccines in West Africa early next year.
