De la Renta, alongside Bill Blass, Roy Halston and Geoffrey Beene, helped to define US fashion in the late 60s and early 70s. The New York-based designers carved out an "American look" that was finally taken seriously in Europe. Their influence has lasted to this day. De la Renta's creations have been seen and mentioned in "Sex and the City".

He was named womenswear designer of the year by the Council of American Fashion Designers in 2000, who also gave him a lifetime achievement award.
