APEC member leaders gathered at the Yanqi Lake International Convention Center this morning. Chinese President Xi Jinping is chairing the meeting, which is still going on. The leaders of 20 other Asia-Pacific member economies are there, along with China, for talks on economic integration, innovation, and infrastructure investment.

President Xi Jinping says APEC members are spreading their wings to shape a new future.

Xi said the gathering of 21 APEC members was like a "flock of migrant swans, flying to Yanqi Lake, before returning to Nature".

This year marks APEC’s 25th anniversary. President Xi hailed the bloc’s achievements. But he reminded delegates of the opportunities and challenges that still lie ahead. President Xi said more innovation was needed, to create new means of economic growth. He called for a new economic pattern, featuring innovation, inter-connectivity and common interests.

Tuesday’s talks are set to continue discussions on three key topics -- deepening regional economic integration, advancing economic reforms and innovation and boosting infrastructure investment and comprehensive connectivity.

President Xi says he’s confident that today’s meeting will inject new impetus for the development of APEC.
