China's top sports body has decided to downplay the importance of gold medals. The General Administration of Sport of China said on Monday that it will no longer rank provincial teams by the number of medals earned at the National Games, the country's largest domestic sports event.
The move comes in response to findings made by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. The disciplinary watchdog discovered fraud and match-fixing during an investigation into the General Administration of Sport of China from July to September last year.
Meanwhile the CCDI said on Saturday that the anti-corruption campaign targeting the country's top sports body was one of the factors behind China's improved performance at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
