American photographer John Moore's "Ebola Overwhelms Liberian Capital" won Picture of the Year.
This year's event received more than 30,000 entries from more than 70 countries around the world.
An international judging committee composed of 13 members from 10 countries and regions worldwide worked for three and a half days, selecting award-winning photos and photo stories in each of the eight categories.
Moore, of Getty Images, won the Picture of the Year prize. Other winning photos covered some of the most important events of the year, including the crisis in Ukraine and the missing Malaysian Airlines plane.
With the motto "Peace and Development," the China International Press Photo Contest was initially launched by Chinese Photojournalists Society in 2005 in Shenzhen, southern China's Guangdong province.
It has become an annual contest that has spread to different Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing.
