Among the deepest traditions in the Tibet Autonomous Region is its systems of medicine, astronomy and astrology. And starting from 2010, authorities there have been collecting ancient texts on these topics, aiming to preserve the essential parts of the region's cultural heritage, with the ultimate goal of building a central repository by 2020.

Over the past 5 years, staff at the Tibetan Medicine College have traveled across the Tibet Autonomous Region with one mission: preserve their history. So far they have collected more than 600 volumes of ancient texts on the Tibetan systems of medicine, astronomy and astrology from temples, villages and scholars.

From these documents, the college has published 30 books, including China's Traditional Tibetan Medical Texts, which is considered vital to the study of Tibetan traditional medicine. But they know there is still much more work to be done...

The Tibetan system of medicine boasts a history of nearly 4,000 years. In 2006, it was listed as national intangible culture heritage.

The preservation project carried out by the Tibetan Medicine College hopes to lay a solid foundation so that future generations can continue to research and develop the practice of Tibetan traditional medicine.
