China's army and air force have started an air-ground live-fire drill in southwest China's Yunnan Province, close to the border with Myanmar. The exercise aims to test military maneuvers, reconnaissance, strike power, mobilization and militia reserve support.

The exercise will be conducted in accordance with training plans, with exercise areas and attack targets randomly selected. Aviation, artillery, air defense, infantry, missile and radar military units are participating in the drill. According to a PLA statement released on Monday, no aircraft will be allowed to enter the airspace of the drill without permission. It added Chinese authorities have informed Myanmar of the drill, and an end date will be announced later.

Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying called in a press conference for peace and tranquillity along the border.

"We think the situation in northern Myanmar touches upon the peace and tranquillity of the China-Myanmar border region. We are willing at this point to once again urge those concerned in Myanmar to show restraint and prevent an escalation in the conflict, and to cool the situation as soon as possible so as to avoid loss of safety and order along the China-Myanmar border. We hope Myanmar will make joint efforts with China to promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations," Hua said.
