Before sitting down for talks, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Mateparae outside Beijing's Great Hall of the People. The Governor-General made the trip at the invitation of President Xi.

His visit reciprocates the Chinese leader's visit to New Zealand last year. During his trip to China, he will also visit Shanghai to attend a reception for New Zealand businesses, as well as Harbin in China's northern Heilongjiang Province.
