Zhang was born in China's northern Hebei province in 1986. He joined China's armed police at the age of 18. Zhang initially began as a military working dog handler. Zhang was known for his work ethic and integrity and eventually worked his way up to become a skilled sniper and anti-terror expert. Zhang was deployed to Somalia in January.
Correspondence between Zhang and a former comrade indicates that he had been injured in a mission in Mogadishu just a few months ago. But Zhang was determined to stay with his mission despite being told by superiors to return home for recovery.
