Among the victims of Sunday's deadly attack at Jazeera Palace Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, was 29 year-old Zhang Nan, a Chinese armed police officer tasked with the security of the Chinese embassy in Somalia.

Zhang was born in China's northern Hebei province in 1986. He joined China's armed police at the age of 18. Zhang initially began as a military working dog handler.

Zhang was known for his work ethic and integrity and eventually worked his way up to become a skilled sniper and anti-terror expert. Zhang was deployed to Somalia in January.

Correspondence between Zhang and a former comrade indicates that he had been injured in a mission in Mogadishu just a few months ago. But Zhang was determined to stay with his mission despite being told by superiors to return home for recovery.
