Senior diplomats from China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are meeting in Tianjin municipality to discuss issues relating to the South China Sea. The meeting is the ninth Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties or DOC in the South China Sea. China's Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin is attending the meeting.
The diplomats will discuss how to fully and effectively implement the DOC, press ahead with pragmatic maritime cooperation and advance the consultation on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea under the DOC framework. China and ASEAN countries signed the DOC in 2002, with the aim to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. The declaration, the first political document concluded between China and ASEAN over the South China Sea issue, bears a positive significance for enhancing mutual trust between the two sides.
