Actress Shu Qi has had a busy career, making almost 80 films in the last 20 years, and is a winner of the prestigious Golden Horse Award in Taiwan. Now, she is playing the lead in "All You Need Is Love", a new romantic comedy directed by her friend and costar, Richie Ren.

Shu stars as a woman who goes to Peng Hu, an outlying island of Taiwan, to escape problems at home. There, she meets an owner of a bed-and-breakfast, played by Ren, who is struggling to make ends meet.

Shu has only one criticism of the first-time director.

"I think to be a director, you need to have a lot of experiences, and I think he's ready. However, his biggest flaw is that he's too nice. It's not a good thing if a director is too nice," She said.

Ren, who also co-wrote the screenplay, has a full resume of his own, with more than 30 film roles.

"A lot of people were very nervous because they're working with an international superstar. They're very cautious. Even though they're not experienced, they're passionate, but sometimes not so skilled. I can see their passion though. So I wanted to calm their nerves, so we did a lot of barbeques or we'd go out and eat seafood. Thank goodness things aren't so expensive in Peng Hu, otherwise I might have needed to sell my house," Ren said.

One scene in particular called on Shu to step out of her comfort zone - singing a duet with Ren.

"I think the sincerity, and the emotions you put in the song, actors do that well. However, maybe if we can put you in a different environment, instead of facing the camera, you're now using your voice to face the microphone, you can adjust to that. I hope to produce an album for you," Ren said.

"All You Need Is Love" is released in Hong Kong and Taiwan in early September.
