Washington's giant panda expected to give birth soon

A 4-centimeter fetus can be seen in this ultrasound image. Mei Xiang had the scan on Wednesday. Vets at the zoo figure she could give birth early next week or possibly in early September. But they also warn that Mei Xiang could miscarry or resorb--or re-assimilate-- the fetus.

Mei Xiang is a star tourist draw in the US capital. She was artifically insemianted in April. Last month a urine test indicated pregnancy or a false pregnancy. Mei Xiang is also showing behaviors in line with pregnancy, such as spending more time in her den, body licking and cradling objects.
