A war of words continues over the Russian warplane that was struck down by Turkish fire. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said in televised remarks that Russia has not received any apology from Turkish leaders over the incident, or any proposals to compensate Moscow. Putin said Turkey's actions strained the relations between the two countries.

"We received no comprehensive apology from Turkey at a high diplomatic level, no offer of compensation for the harm and damage done, and no promise to punish the culprits of this crime. We have an impression that the Turkish government is consciously driving Russian-Turkish relations to a stalemate. We regret that," Putin said.

Putin called Turkey's downing of the plane a "stab in the back" from a country that Russia considered a friend. Turkey however is adamant its forces did not know the nationality of the plane before shooting at it. But Putin said this was impossible as the aircraft bore Russian insignia.

He added that Russian military had informed Turkey's ally - the United States - about the plane's coordinates. Putin also said there are industrial-scale oil supplies flowing to Turkey from militants-controlled regions in Syria.
