A photography exhibition dubbed 'Silk Road Journey' has opened at the Reignwood Center in Beijing. Famed 'National Geographic Magazine' photographer, Michael Yama'shita, took the shots over eight years along the routes of Marco Polo's overland journey to Asia, and Admiral Zheng He's sea voyages from China to Arabia and Africa. Michael Yamashita invites us to join his "Silk Road Journey", retracing the footsteps of Marco Polo and Zheng He along the ancient Land and Maritime Silk Roads, respectively.
Through nearly a hundred photos, visitors get to witness the extraordinary sights and local customs along the way.
Yamashita began the adventure in 1999, and over the following eight years, traversed war zones, deserts, and no man's lands, running a gauntlet of setbacks and difficulties.
"As far as I know I'm the only one who has traveled," said Michael Yamashita, the photographer.
Yamashita has been shooting for National Geographic Magazine for over 30 years, combining his dual passions of photography and travel.
His meticulous style has vividly recreated the epic sea voyages undertaken by Zheng He in nearly three decades of exploration, and he has even contributed evidence that Marco Polo really did make his trip to China in the 13th-century.
"Many of the places we went have not changed," said Yamashita.
The exhibition is sponsored by Reignwood Group in the spirit of fostering cultural exchange between East and West.
"More than two thousand years ago, our ancestors opened up the Silk Road, building a bridge connecting east with west and writing a beautiful chapter in history. This photography exhibition will offer us an opportunity to re-examine the route of the ancient Silk Road," said Shen Zhu, Director-General of Beijing Reignwood Culture Foundation.
The photography exhibition, which runs through March the 25th in Beijing, will later tour Hong Kong, Singapore, and London.
