China wins three gold medals in Rio Olympics

China's first gold was won by Zhang Mengxue, who claimed the women's 10 meter air pistol title. The 25-year-old finished with 199.4 points after 20 shots. Zhang established her lead midway through the event and pulled away with a 10.9 perfect shot in the final rounds.

China also secured the first diving gold when Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao won the women's synchronised 3-meter springboard. The pair got an overall score of 345.6 points from five dives, some 31 points ahead of the runner-ups. The performance also made veteran Wu the most decorated female diver with 7 medals.

Weightlifter Long Qingquan took gold in the men's 56-kilogram category with a combined total of 307 kilograms. He broke the 16- year-old record of 305 kilograms. Long lifted 170 kg with his last attempt in the clean and jerk, and earlier raised 137 kg above his head in the snatch.
