To Europe for football from the UEFA Champions league as the titleholders Real Madrid travelled to Poland to face Legia Warsaw in Group F.

Two weeks ago the champs crushed lowly Legia 5-1 in Madrid, but this would be a much different game, not least of all because it was played in an empty stadium, and it would take a late strike from Mateo Kovacic to save the visitors some major embarassment.

It's a surreal situation at the Polish Army Stadium but Real certainly seem unaffected early as Gareth Bale scores on a thunderous volley just 57 seconds in for the fastest goal ever scored by a Madrid player in the champions league.

In the 35th minute, they make it 2-0 through Karim Benzema who finishes off a Bale cutback.

But Legia hit back with a brilliant piece of skill and finish from Vadis Odjidja five minutes before halftime,

Then Miroslav Radovic completes a shock comeback by the hosts with a toe poke into the bottom corner in the 58th minute and it's 2-2.

But they're not done there as the hosts take the lead in the 83rd minute when Thibault Moulin blasts in off the post. Not sure who's cheering.

However two minutes later Kovacic rifles in the equaliser to salvage a 3-3 draw and save an embarassing result for the champs.

"This was a complicated match because when you score two goals away from home normally it's a match that you control. But at the end we allowed Legia back in the game," said Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid coach.

"When they scored the first goal it was a different match. A strange match, a complicated match but we lacked a bit of everything, a bit of intensity, a bit of movement, a bit of desire but it's like that, sometimes this can happen, a strange match like today, the good thing is that we didn't lose the game and we have to think about our next match."

Higuain scores penalty for Serie A champions

In group H we've got Italian Serie A champions Juventus taking on Lyon, and Juve are given a penalty when Stefano Sturaro is clumsily pushed over by Mouctar Diakhaby in the box.

Gonzalo Higuain steps up to do the honors and calmly converts to make it 1-0 for the Bianconeri.

Claudio Marchisio is back from injury and almost scores here in the 25th minute with a blistering low strike. Shortly before halftime Higuain misses an absolute gimme after Mario Madzukic does all the hard way to set him up, only for the Argentine to somehow scoop it over the bar. With time winding down, Lyon find the net off this free kick when Corentin Tolisso connects on a header and the match would end in a 1-1 draw

Also in group H, Sevilla crushed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0. In Group G, Porto beat Brugge 1-0 and Leicester drew 0-0 with Copenhagen. Borussia Dortmund saw off Sporting CP 1-0 in Group F. And in Group E, Monaco defeated CSKA Moscow while Tottenham lost to Bayer Leverkusen 1-0.
